Urban Caching

City Geocaches – not my favorite kind. I would much rather be hiking a forest trail or paddling my kayak. So where is my motivation for getting these off my list? Partner up with someone!

Today caching buddy Darren shot me a text about hunting some caches in town. Sure, I said. We had a enjoyable time picking off several over the next few hours. Yep, ganging up on city caches is definitely more fun that by oneself!

My finds for the day.....

A Cache A Day…..

We geocachers sure like to analyze our statistics and one I hadn’t thought about for awhile was the number of consecutive days finding a cache. My best streak was 16 back in 2008. Now sixteen isn’t a terribly impressive streak but when you have a job and you’ve already found most caches in your area it can be quite difficult to find one every single day!

About four days into the new year I noticed that I’d found a geocache every day since. Well, maybe it was time to see if I could beat that! Now that I was retired it should be a piece of cake….yep! For the next several days I managed to hunt one down despite battling a cold. Here is how it progressed……..

1-1-12 * Sacajawea
1-2-12 * Willamette River Sedimentation Earthcache
1-3-12 * Life’s a Beach
1-4-12 * Cave Troll
1-5-12 * Troll Free
1-6-12 * Dead Men Tell No Tales #2
1-7-12 * Missing “Link-O-Log”

And……..there the streak ended! Foiled again! No geocache found for the 8th. Well, I have plenty of time to try again!

Day Trek to Brookings

Today Patricia had to attend a work meeting at the college’s newest campus – Brookings. They were all bussed down there but I drove down to pick her up at the end of the day so she could stop for photo ops on the return trip. I used the drive down as an opportunity to do some geocaching. I didn’t really have time to hike to any – just picking off a few close to the main highway. It also gave me a chance to scout some potential scenes for Patricia.

We spent the afternoon through sunset at Whaleshead Beach just north of Brookings. One of the seastacks there had a spouting horn displaying it’s great spray!
