Florence Dune Caching

The last couple of weeks I’ve made four day excursions north to Florence geocaching in the local dunes and forest trails. It’s been many months since I’ve hunted for anything other than the occasional in-town cache as I passed through. It was time to remedy that. The Florence area has some great places to hike and explore.

March 23:  Seven caches found today, including a puzzle cache that has plagued me for a year or more! It wasn’t that hard to solve but it involved getting information from two locations far enough apart to make navigating to the final difficult in one day. Got it out of the way today though! Nice day in the South Jetty dunes!

March 24:  Ten caches on this day. Started with several new caches in the forestland just east of the Glenada area. Picked up a couple more in town then finished the day with a short hike at the Siltcoos Campground as I headed back home. The trail was almost impassible due to recent storm damage but I managed to find the cache there.

March 26:  Cape Mountain north of Florence was my primary destination today – four new caches up there I needed to get. After this pleasant hike, I headed for the Baker Beach area for two caches followed by a visit to the Heceta Head Lighthouse for a couple more then finished the day with a short dune hike on the Sutton Trail system from the Alder Dune Campground for two final caches. Ten caches in all today and great scenery!

April 6:  Dune hiking was the goal today. For too long I had been ignoring the dune caches around Honeyman State Park. Though I had hoped for a full day on the dunes, I forgot my park permits which meant much longer hiking distances. With the threat of rain I opted to hunt the two closest caches and save the rest for a day when I can park in a more central location. After this one mile hike, I returned to the Baker Beach area for another short one mile hike and geocache. Third and final hike of the day was another mile along the beach near Driftwood Shores.

Dunes had many of these little ponds to skirt around....

I’m looking forward to more dune hikes soon.

Yeah, picked up several caches but…….

Two trips to Eugene recently resulted in 30+ cache finds but………..

Not much to write about. No pictures to show. No one to gab with.

Just not the same as my recent excursions with other cachers!

That’s all I need to say…………….

Okay, maybe one thing is worth writing about – finding a troubled multi near Curtin – Mile 166:

It had a lot of Did Not Find reports and few people have even looked for it. I decided to stop and give it another try and was able to complete it – but it took awhile. You come away with a good feeling when you find one like this that gives so many fits!

Port Orford & Cape Blanco

Spent the day caching with Darren in the Port Orford, Elk River, Cape Blanco area.

But first we decided to hunt a brand new group of caches on Highway 42S – even managed to be First To Find on several of them.

Nearing Port Orford, we turned up the Elk River for three caches. Found two of them including one that earned a favorite point from me – Fly & Tackle Box. This cache involved searching around monster boulders, in crevices, avoiding poison oak…..yeah, that’s caching!

Next, we went into Port Orford and grabbed lunch at a place I’ve been meaning to try for some time – The Crazy Norwegian – excellent fish-n-chips, btw!

Hunted a few caches near town then headed out to Cape Blanco State Park for a couple more. Walked the horse trails for a puzzle cache then headed for home.

Garrison Beach at Port Orford

Last cache of the day brought us to the Denmark Cemetery where we hung around awhile visiting dead people!
